Opioids target mu, kappa, and delta receptors to disinhibit dopaminergic pathways in the CNS (central nervous system) causing euphoria, sedation, and pain relief.

Overdose can cause respiratory depression, coma, and even death. Naloxone (brand name Narcan) is an antidote that acts as a non-selective and competitive opioid receptor antagonist. Narcan is especially used in acute opioid overdoses.

Withdrawal from opioids is rarely fatal, but extremely unpleasant. Withdrawal symptoms can include: nausea & vomiting, cramps, muscle jerks, tremor, chills, lacrimation, rhinorrhea, yawning, and hyperpnea.
