Addressing health disparities within the Native American community
January 22, 2019 12-1pm (Online)*
The event will examine the health disparities that are seen in the Native American community, and how physicians can address these disparities. The speakers will share some practical takeaways that physicians (and other providers) can implement immediately.
Speakers include:
Angela Erdrich, MD, Member of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa (Ojibwe) from Wahpeton, North Dakota and a pediatrician with the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis
Mary J. Owen, MD, Director, Center of American Indian and Minority Health at the University of Minnesota Medical School – Duluth Campus and spends her clinical time at the Cass Lake Indian Health Service

​​MMA Gun Violence Workshop

The workshop will include a 45-minute panel discussion on topics such as “gun violence as a public health issue," “how to talk to patients and families about guns in the home” and “how to be an advocate on gun safety in the community.” The panel will also review gun legislation at the Capitol. The second-half of the event will include table discussions in which attendees will have the opportunity to discuss how to talk to legislators about gun violence, the value of physicians sharing their stories and the importance of demonstrating why physician advocacy on this issue is for patients and the community.

Don't miss your chance to meet with your own legislators and advocate for medicine at the capitol! White coats have a powerful voice in the government. Information will be provided to participating students so that you are equipped to provide accurate information to legislators and lobby effectively for bills that you want your legislators to support. Advance registration closes on Wednesday, February 6! Late/walk up registrations may be possible, however MMA cannot guarantee meetings with your legislators if you register after the February 6 deadline.

Structural racism and other barriers to health equity

The event will focus on structural racism, historical trauma and other barriers that stand between our minority communities and their ability to achieve equitable health.
