Hands On Advocacy
Native American Community Clinic Open House
On May 15 HOA will be hosting a table at the NACC Open House, an annual health fair hosted by the Native American Community Clinic focused on gathering community and promoting health and well being. This year’s theme is “Water Is Life” and will feature spiritual advisors and traditional music and prayers, representatives from different community organizations, free health screenings, fun activities, a free lunch, and plenty of information about health and wellness. HOA will provide information about vaccines and updates on the measles outbreak. Email minnesotahoa@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer!
SNMA Health Fair
On April 1, we will be joining many other health-related organizations at the Midtown Global Exchange in Minneapolis for the annual SNMA Health Fair. We will have a table with vaccine trivia, vaccine coloring sheets, and great prizes for all who attended. At the fair you can also get your lead levels checked, learn about nutrition, get health information for your patients in Somali, Spanish or Hmong, and try out some of the great ethnic fold sold at the Midtown Exchange. Please contact minnesotahoa@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer at our table. See you at the fair!
PIG Skills Night
The Pediatric Interest Group (fondly known as PIG) is hosting a Skills Night at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities on Tuesday, March 7 from 6-8pm. Students will have the opportunity to learn a variety of skills with real pediatric standardized patients. We will be hosting a station in which you will learn the CASE method of talking to vaccine hesitant parents and will have the opportunity to practice on some real parents! Please contact pig@umn.edu if you have questions about the event!
Pediatrics Day at the Capitol
Didn't get enough time with your representative at MMA Day at the Capitol and want to talk to them again? Or maybe you care more about issues relating to children's health? We are going back to the capitol again on March 21 to talk to our legislators specifically about vaccines. Children can't vote and there are no pediatricians in the MN state legislator, so we need doctors and medical students to stand up and fight for the rights and health of children statewide.
Agenda:
1:00 - 2:15: Welcome and overview of key issues; group discussion with legislative leaders
2:15 - 2:30: Group photo
2:30 - 4:00: Individual meetings with legislators (MNAAP will coordinate 1-2 brief meetings on your behalf; meetings typically last 5-10 minutes)
4:00 - 6:00: Appetizers and debrief at Rathskeller Cafe inside the Capitol (note new location)
More details to come!
MMA Day at the Capitol
Never has it been more important to have your voice heard by your representatives. Physicians and medical students please join us at MMA Day at the Capitol to learn about and practice advocacy with your peers and meet in person with your representative. You will receive training on how to effectively advocate for issues, as well as information on some of the top issues affecting healthcare in MN. We will be joined by physicians from around the state and medical students from the UMN Twin Cities, UMN Duluth, and Mayo Medical School. If possible, please register by Feb. 8th so the MMA can set up a meeting with your representative in time for the event.

Vaccine Campaign Kick Off Lunch Lecture
Our first event of 2017 will be our Kick Off Lunch Lecture on January 31st in Duluth and February 6 in the Twin Cities.
Duluth's lunch lecture was a success with an interesting discussion on the use of motivational interviewing with vaccine hesitant parents and some MI practice.
The Twin Cities lunch lecture is coming up! We will have two fantastic speakers: Lynn Bahta from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Karen Ernst from the Minnesota Childhood Immunization Coalition. These two will be speaking about the state of vaccination and vaccine law in Minnesota, the role of MDH in vaccine advocacy, and current vaccine advocacy efforts in our state. Please join us in Moos 2-650 from 12:15 - 1:15pm on Monday, February 6. All health-related students are invited to attend. Food will be available!
